Choosing a dialysis center when you’re diagnosed with chronic kidney disease is a very important decision, because the dialysis center will be a home away from home for the patient, as he/she will have to visit the center at least 3 times a week and spend 3 to 4 hours for the dialysis procedure.
Choosing a Dialysis Center
Before making a choice of the dialysis center, it is important to consider the distance of the dialysis center from your home or office and the time you will be spending on travelling to and from the dialysis center. You will also have to visit the dialysis center to allow you to become familiar with the way to get there and to evaluate the overall cleanliness of the facility. Before starting dialysis, it is important to get to know the health care team that will be working with you and know if the facility is adequately staffed and the staff are well-experienced at their job. You should be able to feel comfortable with the healthcare team. And of course, it is important that your nephrologist forms a part of the dialysis team. A dialysis care team usually consists of a nephrologist, a nephrology nurse, a renal dietitian and a patient care technician. Another important factor to consider is the quality of the dialysis equipment being used and the quality of aftercare. You may want to meet other patients taking treatment at the center and speak to them about their experience at the dialysis center and how well the staff has looked after them. It may be useful to check on the added benefits that the facility provides like, T.V. or free Wi-Fi which will help keep you occupied while you are undergoing the dialysis procedure. If you are interested in doing hemodialysis at home, the center should be able to train you on how to carry out the hemodialysis at home on your own, provide you with the dialysis equipment, and may be send a technician home for the first few days to inspect if you are doing dialysis in the same way that you are expected to carry out the procedure and assist you when necessary, until you learn the ropes of the procedure and are able to do the dialysis on your own. However, you will be required to visit the nephrologist on a regular basis to make sure hemodialysis is helping you and your health condition is stable.
