Patient is a 60 year old retired male diagnosed with Stage 5 Chronic Kidney Disease. Patient has been undergoing in-centre hemodialysis at DaVita Kilpauk, Chennai since 11 Februaty 2014. Patient was prescribed hemodialysis thrice weekly in-centre, but patient was non-compliant to his HD sessions. This resulted in inadequate HD, a high amount inter dialytic weight gain, worsening of anemia.
Following a conversation with the family and with the nephrologist, patient opted for hemodialysis at home and was willing to be compliant. This included a full-fledged dialysis installation at patients’ home, including a smaller capacity RO plant and Fresenius 4008s machine among other vital monitoring equipment. Patient was now free to undergo dialysis at his schedule – with a dialysis technician on hand to ensure priming, initiation, dialysis procedure and closure during all sessions. Patient transitioned to Home Hemodialysis (HHD) Modality on 10 October 2014 at same frequency of 3x weekly.
At the time of writing, patient has undergone a total of 160 dialysis sessions which included 46 in-centre and 114 home dialysis treatments. It was noticed that overal Quality of Life drastically improved once the patient was on HHD modality –
- Patient showed full compliance to dialysis treatments
- Frequency of sessions improved to 3 per week and with improved adequacy and better weight control
- Nutrition status improved.
- No intra session emergencies
- No hospitalization to date
